Brentwood Neighborhood

The historic, urban community of Brentwood is located only about three miles north of downtown Jacksonville, in the area known as Metro North. The neighborhood is located just east of Interstate 95 and just north of Martin Luther King Parkway.

Originally, the community was developed around a streetcar line on what is now Woodbine Street. It has been more than 70 years since streetcar service stopped along this corridor. However, the streetcar line has influenced the pedestrian-friendly community that Brentwood is today.

Main Street is the major roadway that connects Brentwood to neighboring communities to the north and the south. This commercial corridor is also home to the elaborate Andrew Jackson Senior High School, which opened in 1927. Norwood Avenue also serves as a centralized commercial district for the Metro North neighborhoods.

Housing in Brentwood, unlike that in other urban core communities, is primarily bungalow architecture. Many houses have been restored or newly constructed by the Metro North CDC, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to the restoration of Jacksonville’s northside communities. Houses in the Brentwood neighborhood remain affordable so that all residents can realize the dream of home ownership.

Catherine Hester McNair Park, also known as Brentwood Park, is a 17-acre park created in 1929. It includes trails, ball fields, tennis courts, basketball, shuffleboard, picnic areas, and playgrounds. Brentwood Park is also home to the Brentwood Park Bandstand, which is one of Jacksonville’s rare examples of Neoclassical/Greek architecture. The bandstand was designed and built in 1932 and has since served as a community gathering place for the residents of Brentwood.
