Sunshine bounces off the crystal blue water of the Gulf of Mexico and shines through the fronds of the palm trees standing along the shoreline. Sugary white beaches hold a bevy of treasures, from seashells and sand dollars to shark teeth and beach glass. Long-legged herons stand along the rivers and canals while comical pelicans nose-dive into the surf. It’s a scene Lee County residents are very familiar with – many see it every time they look out their windows. Lee County is located along the beautiful southeastern coast of Florida and is home to two gorgeous cities: Fort Myers and Cape Coral.
Fort Myers, the county seat, was established in 1886. Southwest Florida has long been a tourist destination, and Fort Myers is no exception. Famous winter residents included Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, whose homes are popular attractions. The Royal Palm Hotel was built in 1898 and Fort Myers became a famous winter resort. Historic downtown Fort Myers is a popular area for art and entertainment.
The newer city of Cape Coral was founded in 1957. Cape Coral is a city of canals and waterways, and boating and fishing are major pastimes. Cape Coral contains an amazing 400 miles of canals which weave across the city, some leading to the Gulf of Mexico. Located across the Caloosahatchee River from Fort Myers, the two cities are combined into one metro area.
Colleges and universities in Lee County include Edison State College in Fort Myers and Florida Gulf Coast University, a relatively young state university that opened in 1997.
In addition to swimming, boating, surfing, fishing, and sunbathing, Lee County residents enjoy shelling, golfing, and bird watching. Sanibel Island is a well-known shelling destination, and Fort Myers Beach contains two more popular islands, Estero and San Carlos. There are four wildlife refuges in Lee County that protect delicate mangroves, endangered species, and migrating birds.
