Perdido Key Neighborhood

Perdido Key is a sun-struck barrier island off the south coast of Florida and Alabama. It is also the name of a lovely seaside neighborhood on the island. The Perdido Key neighborhood consists mostly of raised condominiums and offers tennis and basketball courts, a pool, and docks. However, its serene natural setting is the highlight.

To the west of the neighborhood is Perdido Key State Park. To the south is Perdido Key Road, and beyond that, the dunes, the beach, and blue gulf waters. On the east and north are the calmer waters of the Old River and Perdido Bay. The only street in the neighborhood is the narrow and short Sharp Reef Road. The zip code here is 32507.

Children residing in this community attend Helen Caro Elementary. They continue on to Bailey Middle School and then to Escambia High. These are all highly rated Escambia County Schools.

Food shopping and sundries are just up the island road, along with many ocean-view restaurants and nightspots. Excursion shopping might include a trip to Orange Beach, just across the state line in Alabama. It has an amusement wharf with a Ferris wheel, as well as shops and restaurants and substantial shopping downtown.

Nearly half the land on the island is nature preserve of one sort or another. The parks shelter sea turtles, snowy plovers, and black skimmers -- stylish black and white birds with vivid touches of orange. Sea oats cover the rolling dunes, but hardy pines grow in the parks as well. Twining among the dunes is railroad vine and beach morning glory.

The neighborhood of Perdido Key sits beside a nature preserve and offers beautiful views of the white sands, the sea, and the sky.
