Downtown Atlanta Neighborhood

Following the Olympic Games in 1996, the amount of money and interest in improving the downtown area of Atlanta began to increase dramatically. As a result, new businesses began pouring into the neighborhoods and a range of new housing options from apartments to condominiums began to appear.

A number of athletic clubs are located in Downtown Atlanta, providing residents with plenty of exercise options. For those who like to get outside, the 6-acre Woodruff Park is located a few blocks away from the neighborhood. The park offers open green spaces, as well as walking areas, decorative fountains, and sculptures.

Because the area’s transit station offers connections to both the east-west and north-south rail lines, as well as access to almost any connecting bus line, Downtown Atlanta residents can get by without having to own a car, unless they work in one of the outermost areas of the city. Several of the neighborhoods in this community have been rated as very pedestrian-friendly, including the Five Points area, the Poncey-Highland community, and the historic Sweet Auburn district.

With a number of major attractions located in and adjacent to the Downtown Atlanta neighborhood, there’s bound to be something to suit every taste. Family-friendly attractions like Centennial Park, the newly relocated World of Coca-Cola, and The Georgia Aquarium are located just blocks away from educational and cultural options such as the CNN Center and the Rialto Center for the Arts. If shopping and nightlife are on your agenda, Underground Atlanta offers a variety of shopping, dining, and nighttime entertainment choices, and sports fans are only a mile or two away from Phillips Arena, The Georgia Dome, and Turner Field.

Life in Downtown Atlanta isn’t all events and sightseeing. There’s plenty of learning going on as well, since the area is also home to Georgia State University, one of the country’s busiest commuter schools.
