Whittier Mill Village Neighborhood
One of the many quaint little neighborhoods in the Atlanta area, Whittier Mill Village, with its picturesque scenery and small-town feel, stands a cut above the rest. Technically located inside the Perimeter and only a ten minute drive from Downtown, Whittier Mill Village is a little quieter, a little friendlier, and a little more lovely than you might come to expect from a large metropolis like Atlanta.
Located in the Northwest quadrant of Atlanta, Whittier Mill Village lies just one mile away from I-285′s South Cobb Drive exit, and is just barely on the Fulton County side of the Cobb/Fulton County line.
Established in 1896, Whittier Mill lies along the Chattahoochee River. Originally founded as a mill town, this neighborhood was named after the prosperous Whittier family, a group of Massachusetts-born mill owners. At the time, the area was served both by the Southern Railroad and an electric streetcar line, making it possible for residents to travel easily into Atlanta.
Changing and adapting to many difficult events in American history, including the Great Depression and World War II, the mills permanently closed their doors in the early 1970s. For decades, the area’s historical buildings went unused, the unwitting victims of arsonists, petty criminals, and the homeless. Although plans to turn the area into a landfill were considered in 1980, the buildings were purchased and dismantled by a home renovation company that was drawn to the century-old timber and bricks. Shortly thereafter, local groups began working on the reconstruction of the neighborhood, hoping to make it a modern-day Southern village.
The project was successful, and today Whittier Village is a family-oriented, middle-class community and a wonderful addition to the Atlanta area. Beautiful and friendly without being pretentious, it is home to a number of independently-owned shops and restaurants, as well as lively community-based arts festivals. In 2005, Creative Loafing named it the Best ITP (Inside The Perimeter) Neighborhood, and in 2010 it was awarded Best Barely ITP Park.
