Calhoun Expressway on the northeast, and Walton Way on the south. Harrisburg is an older neighborhood that is undergoing a local renaissance. Many parts of the neighborhood have been restored and refurbished. Its proximity to many areas of downtown has created a market for the older homes.
The neighborhood is characterized by older frame and brick homes with small yards. Homes are situated very close together. There are many mature shade trees in the community, and landscaping in the restored areas is very attractive. Neighborhood landmarks include the Central Square Shopping Center and Summerville Cemetery.
Using Walton Way, the Harrisburg neighborhood is just minutes from Augusta State University, Paine College, and the Medical College of Georgia. It is also convenient to all of the uptown hospitals, including University Healthcare System Hospital, the Veterans Administration Hospital, the Medical College of Georgia Hospital and Clinics, and Trinity Hospital.
Going north, the Harrisburg neighborhood is convenient to the central business district on Broad Street and all of its museums, restaurants, and parks. Harrisburg is just minutes from the Savannah River and Riverwalk Park. This scenic park provides walking paths on the river and high above the river on the levee. Another Broad Street park is Lake Olmstead and Julian Smith Park. This park offers two community centers, fishing piers, a ball field, a disc golf course, and numerous walking paths that connect to the Riverfront Trail system in Augusta.
