Westside Neighborhood
The Westside neighborhood of Augusta, Georgia is a primarily residential area in the northwest section of the city. The community is served by several major roadways including Carl Sanders Highway (I-20), Riverwatch Parkway, and Washington Road. Washington Road is a major retail and commercial center with a wide variety of shopping, dining, and entertainment options. One of the more popular Augusta night spots, The County Club, which features top country music acts, is located on Washington Road in the Washington Square Shopping Center.
The Augusta Canal National Heritage Area has something for just about everyone. Biking and pedestrian trails, canoe and kayak put-ins, boat tours and charter trips, and a museum are just a few of the recreational and educational opportunities the National Heritage Area has to offer. The canal runs parallel to the Savannah River and is easily accessible from Riverwatch Parkway.
Public ponds, playgrounds, and parks are readily available in the area. Nearby Stewarts Pond is very popular with area residents for fishing and swimming. There are a number of public recreation facilities for both active and passive activities in the Westside neighborhood. Brookfield Park on Mayo Road offers picnic tables, group shelters, playgrounds, a walking trail and a splash pad. Other area parks are the Warren Road Center and Eisenhower Park. Running tracks, football, soccer, and baseball fields, and basketball courts are available at these facilities for recreational and organized play.
Minor league baseball is well represented by Augusta’s GreenJacket ball club. The South Atlantic team is a farm team for the San Francisco Giants and routinely fields some of the best ballplayers in the league. RiverHawks hockey, Troy University football, and nationally ranked NCAA Augusta State University basketball combine to offer year-round spectator fun to sports fans of all ages.
