The first settler arrived to the area of Conyers around 1816 – a blacksmith named John Holcomb. His home was located near the present-day Rockdale County Courthouse in Downtown Conyers. Holcomb liked the area peaceful and rural, so he was against the idea of the railroad coming through the area. A local banker named Dr. W.D. Conyers finally convinced Holcomb to sell his land to him – and Conyers sold it to the Georgia Railroad. He named the railroad station “Conyers Station.” Soon, other residents began to move to the area and Conyers became a flourishing town. In 1854, it was incorporated.
Fire nearly destroyed Conyers on three separate occasions. During the Civil War and General Sherman’s “March to the Sea,” one mill was left standing, thanks to the innovative efforts of the mill’s owner, Aunt Winnie Pucket. She sacked the flour and hid it in the millpond. She then pleaded and even threatened the Union Soldiers, who chose to bypass her mill and leave it alone.
Historic Olde Town Conyers mixes historic architecture with tree-lined streets and brick-paved sidwalks. It is so picture-perfect that it is often used in television and movies for downtown streetscapes. Olde Town Conyers also hosts a variety of events, festivals, and parades.
