Gwinnett County is named after a Georgia delegate who signed the Declaration of Independence, Button Gwinnett. He served briefly as the provisional president of Georgia in 1777, where he ordered his rival, Lachlan McIntosh, to invade East Florida. The failed operation led to a bitter feud and eventually a duel, where McIntosh shot and killed Gwinnett.
The county was created in 1818 and contains just over 400 miles. There are 39 parks in Gwinnett and the popular vacation spot Lake Lanier is nearby, perfect for weekend activities such as boating, swimming, and camping. Other cities in Gwinnett County include Liburn, Duluth, Grayson, Snellville, Auburn, Norcross, Dacula, and Sugar Hill.
