Smyrna at a Glance
Downtown Smyrna Neighborhood
A culturally diverse neighborhood, the Atlanta suburb of Smyrna, Georgia is also known as The Jonquil City. Smyrna obtained this name from the thousands of yellow jonquil flowers that flourish in gardens and along the streets. Smyrna is located just 10 minutes from downtown Atlanta. It is easily accessible to three major interstates, 285, 20, and 75, and can be found northwest of the city.
Downtown Smyrna, also known as Village Green, has recently been completely revitalized. This section of Smyrna has a community center, a municipal library, one-of-a-kind seasonal landscaping including a plethora of jonquils, and outdoor concerts.
Market Village is one element of Village Green, and that section of downtown Smyrna attracts more than just the residents. Mimicking an early 1900s city village, including a square with an elaborate fountain, Market Village is pedestrian-friendly with sprawling sidewalks and trails, and has a wide variety of retail stores, restaurants, bars, special events, and festivals. It is interesting to note that the St. Patrick’s Day festival that takes place in Market Village is known to be the largest in metro Atlanta. Another prominent event in downtown Smyrna is the annual Spice of Life – Food & Culture celebration which takes place each September.
Downtown Smyrna is probably most well known for the beginning of the eco-friendly Silver Comet Trail – a non-motorized track for runners, hikers, walkers, rollerbladers, bicyclists, and dogs, and it is wheelchair accessible. The Silver Comet Trail is over 61 miles long, and starts in Smyrna and ends at the Georgia/Alabama state line.
Shopping options are plentiful in downtown Smyrna, with Cumberland Mall, which hosts Macy’s, Sears, and Costco as anchors. Cobb Galleria Centre, a short walk from Cumberland Mall, across a pedestrian bridge, can also be found in Smyrna. Cobb Galleria Centre hosts exhibitors and top notch events such as the Georgia Bridal Show and the Southeastern Flower Show.
