The City and County of Honolulu is a consolidated city/county in Hawaii. This municipality includes urban Honolulu, the state’s capital and largest city; and the rest of the island of Oahu, plus a few minor outlying islands. The population of the city/county is 953,207, making it the tenth-largest municipality in the US.
One might wonder why everyone doesn’t live here; residents can swim in the warm waters of Waikiki, watch the surfers on the legendary North Shore, and enjoy the vibrant nightlife all around Honolulu. Oahu is called “the Heart of Hawaii” for its island paradise experience.
Honolulu International Airport, approximately 20 minutes from the main resort area of Waikiki, is Hawaii’s major airport and entry point. All major domestic carriers and many international carriers serve Oahu. Three renowned Oahu resort areas are located on the North Shore, the Leeward Coast and in the Kahala area of east Honolulu. Along the main strip of Kalakaua Avenue are world-class shopping, dining, entertainment, activities and resorts.
The city/county of Honolulu offers spectacular natural wonders such as Diamond Head and Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve; as well as rich history and culture at the Iolani Palace, King Kamehameha Statue and Kawaiahao Church, all within the same block.
Other attractions include the Honolulu Zoo and the Waikiki Aquarium; visitors can learn about the history of Waikiki by reading the surfboard markers along the Waikiki Historical Trail.
Pearl Harbor, named for the pearl oysters once harvested there, is the largest natural harbor in Hawaii, a World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument and the only naval base in the United States to be designated a National Historical Landmark. In the devastating aerial attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941, the USS Arizona was hit by a 1,760-pound armor-piercing bomb, resulting in 2,390 dead and hundreds wounded.
Today, the USS Arizona Memorial is a place to learn about this historic attack and pay respects to the brave soldiers who fell that day. The Visitor Center features a film about the attack and displays plaques honoring lives lost on that fateful day.
Businesses headquartered here include Hawaiian Airlines, Island Air, and Aloha Air Cargo, as well as First Hawaiian Bank, Bank of Hawaii, and the Hawaiian Electric Company.
