Archer Heights Chicago Neighborhood

Archer Heights is a quiet, primarily middle-class residential neighborhood on the southwest side of Chicago, Illinois. It has been a center for Polish culture, and is home of the Polish Highlanders Alliance of North America; however a wave of immigration from other neighborhoods and other countries such as Mexico have created a cultural mix.

The major arterial street is Archer Avenue. Developed along what was once a Native American trail, the street runs from south of the downtown area through the southwest side and beyond into the southwest suburbs.

Archer Heights is not far from Midway Airport, located in an area called the “Bungalow Belt” for the houses commonly found here, mostly mid-20th century bungalows. The main business thoroughfare, Pulaski Road, is dominated by strip malls with nationally-known retail chain stores.

This part of town was slow to develop as a residential area; veterans returning after World War II and a post-depression economy caused home builders to expand to the city’s borders. Improved transportation helped the area develop, as well. Interstate 55 or the Stevenson Expressway opened in 1964.The Chicago Transit Authority’s Orange Line, with trains connecting the neighborhoods with Midway and the Loop, went on line in 1993.

Most of the residents of Archer Heights work at the airport or at nearby industries. Although the area is primarily residential, a number of Polish and Mexican restaurants serve both ethnic cuisines.

The local public high school is Curie Metropolitan High School.
