Hermosa Neighborhood

He wouldn’t yet have been able to imagine Jiminy Cricket crooning, “when you wish upon a star… makes no difference who you are … “ but Walt Disney may have looked out his second-floor window at the corner of Tripp and Palmer in the Hermosa neighborhood of Chicago, dreaming of creating little cartoon mice. Who knows?

Disney was born in the home that his carpenter father, Elias Disney, had built for his family eight years earlier at 2156 North Tripp Avenue. The elder Disney had come to Chicago to work at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. The house still stands, although now divided into two rental apartments.

Hermosa, which means “beautiful” in Spanish, is located six miles northwest of the Chicago Loop. The Chicago & North Western Railroad line forms its western boundary east of Cicero Avenue, and the east and south borders are hemmed by two lines of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad.

The area is primarily residential, and although largely Polish and Hispanic, it offers a diverse collection of eateries. Notable is the Barbakan, on Central, named for fortresses still standing in Warsaw and Krakow and known for its cheese and potato pierogi and its brizol, a pork cutlet topped with sauteed mushrooms.

Shamrock Imports, an Irish specialty shop operated for more than 40 years by Maureen O’Looney of County Mayo, featuring all things Irish. The Consulate-General of Honduras in Chicago is located in Hermosa, on West Fullerton Avenue.

Located south of Fullerton Avenue, Hermosa Park’s fieldhouse sits on slightly more than four acres. The fieldhouse is equipped with several meeting rooms and a small kitchen. Outdoors, the park offers two walking paths, areas for field sports, a playground and spray pool.
