Forest Park Neighborhood

From a fort built by General “Mad” Anthony Wayne at the edge of the Indian village of Kekionga in 1794, to the neighborhood with more residents of Greek ancestry (1.6 percent) than nearly any neighborhood in America, the neighborhood of Forest Park in Fort Wayne, Indiana has seen many interesting twists and turns.

Located in the urban area of Fort Wayne and the county seat of Allen County, Forest Park is located along Forest Avenue and Forest Park Boulevard. The community has gone from Indian land to property of the US Army, to a development on the outskirts of a Midwestern city to its status today as a very desirable area in which to live, with real estate vacancies today said to be just over five percent – lower than one will find in 72 percent of American neighborhoods.

One of the reasons for the popularity of this area is its affordability: the median price for a home in Forest Park is $100,728, less expensive than more than half of other Indiana neighborhoods and 80 percent of all US neighborhoods. Rents are more affordable, as well, currently lower in price than more than half of other Indiana neighborhoods.

The neighborhood of Forest Park consists mainly of three- and four-bedroom homes, and small (studio to two-bedroom) apartments. The area is a mix of owners and renters. Many of the homes here are historic, and in fact the neighborhood boasts the Forest Park Boulevard Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Place in 2007.

This district includes a locally significant collection of architecture from the early 20th century. Several houses were designed by prominent local architects as well as nationally recognized designers, such as Barry Byrne who designed the Franke House at 2131 Forest Park. Many homes in this district were designed by architect Charles R. Weatherhogg, and most are of the Colonial Revival or Tudor Revival style.

A large number of residents in the Forest Park neighborhood classify themselves as “urban sophisticates,” a term defined as having more sophisticated tastes in literature, music, live theatre and the arts. Residents on average earn higher wages, are fairly well educated and enjoy travel.
