Capitol Park Neighborhood

The Capitol Park neighborhood is located on the east side of the Des Moines River in zip code 50316. The boundaries of the community are the Des Moines River and Robert D. Ray Drive to the west, East Washington Avenue to the north, East 14th Street to the east and Maple Street and Interstate 235 to the south.

This area is ideally located for people who work in the East Village or at the Capitol, both of which are just a short distance south of Capitol Park. The East Village is directly south, as it the Iowa State Capitol building. Capitol Park is an eclectic neighborhood with lots of single family homes, a few condominiums, and some rental apartments.

Many of the single family homes in this community are extremely old, with some dating back to 1885. In keeping with the kind of lifestyle that people lived at the end of the 19th century, these structures are small by modern standards. The single family buildings range in size from about 1150 square feet to just under 2400 square feet, and the largest homes were built in the 1920s.

There is no shortage of things for residents of this community to do. The Iowa State Capitol building is located at East 9th street and Grand Avenue. It was built between 1871 and 1886. The towering golden dome is visible for miles, and it is an important symbol of the state’s government.

The dome is made of steel and brick and is gilded with 23 karat gold leaf. At the top of the dome, there is a Belvedere with a golden lantern. At every corner of the building below the large dome, there is a small copper covered dome, and at the top of each of the smaller domes, there are small lanterns. Visitors to the capitol building can go on tours which are offered daily, except for Sunday.
