Des Moines at a Glance
Downtown Des Moines is just south of I-235, with the Des Moines River running along the eastern side and the Raccoon River to the south. Downtown Des Moines is home to Drake University, a top-ranking private university that is considered one of the nation’s best. The Wells Fargo Arena, home to rodeos, live concerts, and special events, is also downtown.
As the heart of the city, Downtown Des Moines isn’t your typical downtown area. Yes, there are skyscrapers and major businesses, but there are also elegant, historic homes along shady, tree-lined streets, soaring cathedrals, federal buildings, shops, and restaurants. Be sure to stop in and visit the Hoyt Sherman Place Museum after you’ve chosen an apartment in Downtown Des Moines. Sherman was one of the city’s original founders, and his mansion contains some amazing art and antiques. A large, ornate theater is also located at the site.
In addition to Drake University, Downtown Des Moines is home to Mercy College of Health Sciences, Des Moines University, and Des Moines Community College. In addition to the colleges, Downtown is home to the Science Center and IMAX Dome Theater, the Iowa Events Center, and the Civic Center. Bridges link this neighborhood to the eclectic shops and restaurants of Historic East Village, the River Walk, the State Capitol, and State Historical Museum.
The Historic East Village is the shopping and dining hub of Downtown Des Moines. If you want to live in an area surrounded by amazing shops, restaurants, and entertainment, then look for your Downtown Des Moines apartment in the East Village. This area is home to coffee houses such as the Village Bean, nightclubs such as Wooly’s and Lime Lounge, tea houses that include Gong Fu Tea, antique stores, specialty shops, and boutiques. For more shopping, Jordan Creek Town Center is located nearby. Known as a regional mall, it is the largest in the state.
As both an historic district and an area where two rivers converge, the neighborhood is close to many parks and lakes. The Iowa Trails system runs along the river to the west. A number of golf courses, both public and private, are a short drive away. State parks and reservoirs to the north are popular recreational areas, too.

About Our Deals
Apartment Finder utilizes the industry's largest and most complete database of real-time rents and availabilities to help you find an amazing deal on your next rental.
Price Drop
Apartment communities change their rental rates often - sometimes multiple times a day. We track the changes and keep you up to date when a rental rate decreases.
Best Value
"Best value" units are located in buildings rated three stars or higher. We label apartment rentals that are priced significantly less than similar high-quality units nearby.
Rent Specials
Apartment communities regularly advertise deals for new residents. Whether it's a move-in special or a free tv, we locate the rentals that offer a little something extra when you sign your lease.
Note: Based on community-supplied data and independent market research. Subject to change without notice.
