East Village Neighborhood

Located on the eastern side of the Des Moines River, the neighborhood begins at the river and extends several blocks beyond the State Capitol to East Fourteenth Street. On the north, East Village is bounded by Des Moines Street, and on the south by Vine, which seems appropriate considering that East Village is the site of Des Moines’ annual Wine Festival, “Sips and the City.”

The East Village is the site of many local events, including Bike Night and Blues Before Sunset, among others. It’s a funky, trendy neighborhood, filled with boutiques, great restaurants, and fun entertainment. Among this artsy community’s assets are the Look Look Garden and Hansen Triangle, which showcases outstanding sculpture by world-renowned artists.

Among the most important historic buildings located in East Village is the Iowa State Capitol Building, dating to 1866. This building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features a gold-leafed dome, grand staircase, and ornate woodworking, all of which can be seen on a one-hour tour.

Other historic restorations in the area house residents, retail space, and other commercial enterprises. East Village is known for its hip vibe and lively atmosphere, taking the best of historic Des Moines and mixing it with contemporary flair.

The area is active at night with dining, clubs, and music performances. During the day, it’s an engaging retail environment and site of street markets, festivals, and outdoor events in warmer weather.
