Greenwood Neighborhood

Residents of the historic neighborhood of Greenwood like to boast that theirs is one of the most unusual communities in the City of Des Moines. With a pond, stables, and extensive parkland area, this neighborhood provides a touch of rural life in an urban setting. Greenwood is bounded by Grand Avenue on the north, Lincoln Place Drive on the south, Thirty-first Street on the east, and Thirty-seventh Street to the west.

Renowned for its historic homes, Greenwood’s residents take pride in their well-manicured lawns and graceful old oak trees. Many of the houses in Greenwood date from the late 1800s to 1950s. The landscape includes several blocks of century-old oaks, with stunning views of the Raccoon River and downtown Des Moines.

Greenwood provides access to good schools at every age level, from the recently renovated Greenwood Elementary to Des Moines University, and that age diversity is reflected in the community’s residents, as well. From students to retirees (Wesley Acres is located in the Greenwood neighborhood) this community is the perfect setting for everyone.

Not only is Greenwood close to downtown Des Moines, but its amenities include proximity to the city’s airport and one of the largest parkland areas in the county. More than 1,200 acres make up Water Works Park, another community asset. This park’s manicured grounds offer a lush landscape in addition to providing access to all manner of water sports. At Water Works Park, residents can enjoy tubing, wake boarding, water skiing, and boating. The park frequently holds special events, as well.
