Oak Park Neighborhood
Oak Park is a tidy neighborhood of small Cape Cod and ranch homes. It is conveniently located to major interstates through the city, as well as to top recreational sites. Sidewalks make this a very walkable neighborhood. Its boundaries are North East Aurora Avenue, 6th Avenue, and the Des Moines River.
One of the newest and most exciting recreational sites in Des Moines, Trestle Trail, runs along the east side of the neighborhood. This 25-mile bike trail passes through spectacular scenery and across its own bridge over the Des Moines River. The Greenbelt Trail is another popular trail that provides access to the hundreds of miles of trails in and around the city.
Within a mile or so south of Oak Park, residents enjoy local parks such as Birdland Recreational Complex, which has boat ramps, tennis courts, and hiking trails. Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior Park has a playground, wading pool, tennis and basketball courts, and crafts and computer rooms in a climate-controlled shelter house.
Other recreational areas are only a short drive away from the Oak Park community. One of the most popular is Saylorville Lake at Big Creek State Park, especially good for boating and fishing.
There are several prominent universities near the Oak Park neighborhood. Grand View College is within walking distance, and Drake University, a top-ranked private institution, is about three miles southwest. The Des Moines Area Community College is a few miles north.
Local restaurants and a grocery store are nearby, while national chain restaurants are a bit south. Several Walmart SuperCenters are a short drive from the community.
Golfers can choose from many public courses or private clubs. Woodside and Waveland are closest, both north of I-235.
The historic district is just south of I-235 and a short drive or walk from the Oak Park area.
