Sherman Hill Neighborhood

Sherman Hill is the epitome of historic urban neighborhoods. Once a grand statement of upscale living, it is undergoing a Neighborhood Revitalization Program focused on improvements to further enhance the appeal of the neighborhood’s eclectic architecture and diverse population.

Sherman Hill is Des Moines’ oldest neighborhood established in 1897. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, it offers the charm of eloquent restored Victorian or Queen Anne homes or the opportunity to purchase a property in disrepair. For those who long to live downtown, Sherman Hill provides a wide range of prices to fit almost any lifestyle.

Walking tours are available on special occasions. For those who prefer the supernatural, tour one of the neighborhood homes occupied by ghosts. National experts in paranormal activity claim at least 4 ghosts haunt 1 old Victorian teahouse in the neighborhood.

As the name suggests, Sherman Hill features scenic hills with mature trees towering above buildings. Set on the west end of downtown, this urban area is framed by Interstate 235 to the north, Ingersol Avenue to the south, Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway to the west and 15th Street near the Methodist Medical Center to the east.

Sherman Hill also features cultural events. The acoustically acclaimed Hoyt Sherman Place Theater furnishes an excellent venue for nationally known performers. Built in 1877, businessman Hoyt Sherman’s majestic home also offers rooms available for private functions.

Another historic Sherman Hill restoration, the ornate Italianate Victorian home of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s vice president, Henry A Wallace currently serves as a museum and library.

The popular organic Gateway Market is located on Sherman Hill’s west edge. Several shops, restaurants, bars and other amenities are within walking distance. Gray’s Lake, Waterworks Park and the Des Moines River are also nearby. Public transportation is easily accessible from several locations.
