Somerset Neighborhood

Somerset is a neighborhood in Des Moines, Iowa. The borders of the neighborhood are East Army Post Road to the north, Southeast Fifth Street to the east, Fort Des Moines Park to the south and Fort Des Moines to the west. There are only six streets in this neighborhood East Burnham Avenue, Southeast Fifth Street, Southeast Second Court, East Bundy Avenue, Southeast Third Street and County Park Road.

This residential neighborhood includes single family homes and apartments. The Somerset Apartments offer one, two and three bedroom units in a variety of configurations. The complex has a pool, spa, fitness center, playground and best of all a great location across from the Southridge Mall.

When the residents of Somerset want to shop, they head to Southridge Mall which is adjacent to the neighborhood. There is a selection of shops including Sears, JC Penney, Younkers and Target which are the anchor stores of the mall. The dining options include a Chinese buffet and the Food Court which has a Subway Sandwich Shop. There is also entertainment at the mall including a carousel in the Food Court, a 12 screen cinema and an arcade. There is a Hy-Vee and an Aldi grocery store on East Army Post Road.

Fort Des Moines Park forms one of the boundaries of the neighborhood. It is part of the remains of a former cavalry fort. Established as a fort in the early 20th century, the army used it for 60 years and then in the 1970’s it became a county park. It includes a large lake, picnic area, playground and an arboretum for the enjoyment of all the residents of Des Moines

The Blank Park Zoo is also very close to the Somerset neighborhood. This is a great favorite with children of all ages.
