Waterbury Neighborhood

Waterbury is a historic neighborhood in Des Moines, Iowa. The borders of the neighborhood are the I-235 to the north, 63rd Street to the west, Grand Avenue on the south and Polk Boulevard on the east. There are some sidewalks in the neighborhood. This is an area of gracious homes with lovely features.

Waterbury is a residential community that was planned in the early 1900s. Many of the homes in the neighborhood are between 80 and 90 years old. There are many home styles in the neighborhood including colonials, bungalows, and Tudors. This is an area of lush lawns with landscaping and plenty of mature trees. “Charming” is the word that best describes the entire area.

The Waveland Trail goes through the Waterbury neighborhood. This is a great place to walk, jog, bike, or skate. It is part of a much larger trail system that runs through Des Moines and beyond.

There is a Walmart Super Center located a short distance away on the north side of the I-235 at 73rd Street. There is also a Sam’s Club at the same location. Kaleidoscope at the Hub is a small shopping mall that offers a variety of shops and restaurants. Most are local but there is a Burger King, Subway, and Bruegger’s Bagel Shop.

Waveland Golf Club is located just north of the Waterbury neighborhood. It is a municipal golf course, and at almost 100 years old, it is the oldest public golf course in the state. It offers 18 holes of challenging golf. The slope of the land makes it the most difficult of the public golf courses in Des Moines.
