Des Moines at a Glance
Waveland Park Neighborhood
Waveland Park is a Des Moines neighborhood of stately homes and wide open spaces. The most prominent of those, and one of the largest parks in the city itself, is contained within the neighborhood. Another favorite green area in the community is Waveland Golf Course, one of the best known and most challenging courses in the state.
In addition to being the oldest golf course west of the Mississippi River, Waveland Golf Course is famous for its landscaping, which was designed to take advantage of the rolling wooded hillsides of the area. A vintage 1940s clubhouse enhances the course, which has improved its greens with a recent renovation.
Another neighborhood asset is the historic Drake Municipal Observatory. Located on the golf course grounds and operated jointly by Drake University and the City of Des Moines, the Observatory is home to an eight and one-half foot refracting telescope, which is open to local residents for night sky viewing.
In addition to these assets, Waveland Park is a family friendly neighborhood with exceptional public schools, great shopping, and one of the most used public library branches in the city. Recreational facilities include access to public tennis courts and, as one might expect for such a lush landscape, miles of trails for hiking, jogging, and cycling.
So strong is the city’s desire for a healthy, vibrant community, that it is working to make Des Moines the “Trails Capital of the Country,” and the Waveland neighborhood fits nicely with that plan. Named for its rolling hills, the neighborhood is bounded by Franklin Avenue, 41st Street, 56th Street, and Waveland Woods.
