Pittsburg, KS Apartments for Rent

In southeastern Kansas nearly directly south of Kansas City, the city of Pittsburg is densely populated and fast-growing. This large Midwestern city began as a coal mining camp in the 1870s. As the coal industry grew, so did the settlement. The city incorporated in 1880.

Today’s Pittsburg is an affordable, Midwestern city that is both family-friendly and a college town. Catering to both, there’s a wide variety of entertainment and outdoor fun. Pittsburg is home to three hiking and biking trails and several parks. The largest park is Lincoln Park. It contains batting cages and baseball diamonds, miniature golf and a full 18-hole golf course, and an aquatic center.

Pittsburg State University offers over 100 educational programs. Established in 1903, the school has an unusual mascot – a gorilla. The football team plays in NCAA Division II and has won several championship games.

Sports enthusiasts can enjoy the PSU Gorillas sports events, go golfing, or enjoy a NASCAR race at the nearby Kansas Speedway. Nature lovers will appreciate Prairie State Park, which contains 3,942 acres of forest-grasslands, and Crawford State Fishing Lake Number One, which is just north of Pittsburg.

Pittsburg wraps around a traditional Midwestern downtown area, complete with historical architecture and wide sidewalks. It is home to the historic Fox Theater, several restaurants and pubs, and independently-owned shops and stores.
