This is a quiet area with lots of trees amid single-family detached homes. Walking the dog in this area doesn’t require sidewalks. The neighborhood is located southeast of downtown Topeka
Located on the northern border of the neighborhood, the Hillcrest Community Center offers a large selection of amenities to the neighborhood. The building is surrounded by a park that offers basketball courts, a tennis court, a playground, swimming pool, racquetball courts, and a soccer field. Inside the building there are classes, a free fitness center, a recording studio, computer lab, game rooms, and youth lounge. Three mornings a week there is Creative Play Preschool for children ages 3-5, and six days a week there is a health clinic in the center for those who have a need.
There are two city parks within a short drive of the neighborhood. Lakewood Park has a playground and lots of open space. Dornwood Park has playground equipment and a softball diamond. It is best known for the seven miles of trail that wind through the 110-acre park.
The nearby Shawnee Country Club is a private golf club with an 18-hole course that was designed by Donald Ross. He has created the first three holes to be simple, a warm up for the challenges of the next 15 holes. One of Ross’s hallmarks is offering unexpected challenges on every hole. This club is a two-minute ride from the Central Highland neighborhood.
