College Hill Neighborhood

Just to the south of downtown Topeka, Kansas, is the historic neighborhood of College Hill. Bordering Washburn University to the south, the tree-lined streets are laid out in a neat checkerboard fashion. The houses are older and mostly two-story homes. U.S. Route 75, which is the direct route to downtown Topeka, is a few blocks to the east.

Some of the public schools serving the College Hill area include Topeka West High School, Robinson Middle School, and Lowman Hill Elementary School.

The 160-acre campus of Washburn University offers more than 200 programs for certification, associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees. Washburn is the only municipally-owned university in the country.

Apartment hunters looking for a place to live in the College Hill area have several convenient choices. The College Hill Apartments is right on the eastern edge of College Hill and is the closest to this area. Other possibilities include University Heights Apartments, Library Park Apartments, Fleming Court Apartments, and Fairlane Apartments.

Lake Shawnee, located to the southeast of Topeka, has the world’s only fully-staked, 400-meter-dash rowing course. The 410-acre lake is also surrounded by hiking trails, an 18-hole golf course, sand and volleyball courts, a botanical garden, a beach, a marina, and 127 campground sites.
