Hawthorne Neighborhood

With its heavily tree-lined streets and mature landscapes, Hawthorne gives residents a feeling of living in the midst of a forest. It’s hard to believe as you walk the country lane sidewalks that the community is surrounded by major roadways and sits next to an international airport.

Home designs in Hawthorne tend toward traditional and farmhouse-style houses constructed in the 1940s and 1950s. Hawthorne encompasses zip code 40205. The community is bounded by Taylorsville Road on the north, Henry Watterson Expressway 264 on the east and south, and Bardstown Road on the west. The area is mostly residential, although there is an educational facility in the community.

Of the many appealing aspects of Hawthorne is its ready access to Bowman Field Airport, which opened in 1921 and is one the oldest commercial airports in the country. Various buildings at the airport are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Running along the northwest section of the airport and just outside of Hawthorne is Seneca Park. This public park was established in 1928 and encompasses 526 acres. It offers residents a wide variety of amenities such as four ball fields, two basketball courts, 10 tennis courts, a volleyball court, picnic areas, playgrounds, and miles of hiking, biking and walking trails. Within the park is the Seneca Golf Course. Rated as the sixth most difficult course in Kentucky, Seneca meanders over hills past well-established trees and refreshing streams.

Outside of the neighborhood to the southwest, one finds the Louisville Zoo. The facility features a variety of intriguing exhibits, such as the Gorilla Forest and the Tiger Tundra.
