Garden District Neighborhood

The Garden District is a dense residential and commercial community to the southeast of downtown Baton Rouge, close to the Mississippi River. Since the neighborhood is close to schools, shopping, and tourist spots, visitors will be hard-pressed to get bored while within its borders.

Among points of interest like the North 14th Street Park in the Garden District are several above-ground cemeteries. They include St. Joseph Cemetery and the larger Magnolia Cemetery. Known for their unique construction due to Louisiana’s native swamp land, these cemeteries can be educational spots to visit.

The Garden District’s boundaries are within the 70802 ZIP code. The community is comprised of Government Street, South 18th Street, Myrtle Avenue and South 22nd Street. The term “Garden District” is typically used to describe a much wider area that stretches west to Interstate Highway 10 and north to Highway 190.

Residents of the Garden District neighborhood have several travel options. In addition to the Greyhound station in the northwestern corner of the community, the Capital Area Transit System headquarters in located within the neighborhood’s borders. This public transportation system serves some of the most popular Baton Rogue areas, including the Garden District. Located close to several major highways, the neighborhood has easily accessible thoroughfares for quick travel to other parts of the city. For cyclists and pedestrians, there are well-developed bike lanes and sidewalks.

Several schools are located in the Garden District. Among them are Baton Rouge High School and the Children’s Charter Middle School, both part of the East Baton Rouge Parish School system. Dufrocq Montessori School is also part of this system and has an extended Montessori program. Sacred Heart of Jesus School, a private school for pre-kindergarten through junior-high students, sits just north of the Garden District neighborhood.
