Algiers Point Neighborhood

Algiers Point is a neighborhood located in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is bordered to the south by Alix Street and to the north by Pelican Avenue. Verret Street is the western border, while Belleville Street forms the eastern border of the neighborhood.

Algiers Point has two main time periods in its long history. While some of the homes in the city predate the Civil War, another large section of the town was built after a fire burned down most of the original town in 1895. Another historical fact is that Algiers Point was left almost completely unscathed by the tragic landfall of Hurricane Katrina in 2006.

The town itself is actually located just outside of the actual Algiers Point. Algiers Point refers to the point of land relative to the Mississippi river and is an important navigational point for commercial boaters and others who navigate the river.

The neighborhood is famous for its rich musical heritage. Such famous artists like Henry Allen, Oscar Cellestine, and Elizabeth Douglas actually lived in Algiers Point. There are also many parks and almost three miles worth of space for walking and biking on the levees.

Another cultural aspect to Algiers Point is that it has the Canal Street Ferry, which is located right by the Aquarium for the Americas that goes right through Algiers Point.

Most of the homes in the Algiers Point area are old Victorian homes that today serve as single-family homes, or as some of the bed and breakfast inns that dot the area. These bed and breakfasts are yet another source of pride for the residents of Algiers Point and have wonderful appeal for visitors who desire the homey comfort of these accommodations.
