Fillmore Neighborhood
Fillmore is a large, primarily residential neighborhood in northern New Orleans, Louisiana. The community encompasses more than 1.4 square miles and houses approximately 6,940 residents. It is bordered by Robert E. Lee Boulevard, Prentiss Avenue, and Leon C. Simon Drive on the north. To the south are Harrison Avenue and Fillmore Avenue. Wisner Boulevard is on the west. The less conspicuous eastern boundary is created by Founders Avenue, Wingate Drive, Elysian Fields Avenue, Pratt Drive, and Paris Avenue. Fillmore is situated in the 70122 zip code area within Orleans County.
This neighborhood could be considered affluent among New Orleans communities. As of 2008, the average household income in Fillmore – $71,225 – was substantially higher than the city average of $37,751. Most of the homes were built prior to 1940, which gives the neighborhood an historic feel, but some new construction continued between 1940 and 1990, after which it dwindled.
There are several significant attractions within walking distance of Fillmore. Just outside of Fillmore’s western boundary is City Park, one of the oldest and most visited parks in the country. Spanning 1,300 acres, it is also one of the country’s largest city parks, even bigger than Central Park in New York. Although thousands of trees were damaged in Hurricane Katrina, City Park is still known for having the most live oak trees in the U.S., and many of these mature trees date back more than 600 years. However, staring up at the treetops is certainly not the only thing to do here. Among many attractions are the Carousel Gardens Amusement Park, New Orleans Botanical Garden, New Orleans Museum of Art, and a sculpture garden. Boating, biking, tennis, and horseback riding are quite popular.
Another notable feature of the Fillmore neighborhood is its close proximity to several colleges and universities, and at least five are within walking distance of the community, including the University of New Orleans.
