Freret Neighborhood

The vibrant community of Freret sits in the Uptown area of historic New Orleans, Louisiana. The present day neighborhood lies over fields that were once known as the Bouligny and Avart plantations.

The neighborhood is bounded by South Claiborne Avenue on the north, LaSalle Street on the south, Jefferson Avenue on the west, and Napoleon Avenue on the east. This community is a part of zip code 70115 in Orleans County.

Residents head to Freret on the first Saturday of every month for the Freret Market. This market features three sections, with one devoted to food, another to art, and a third to flea. Local restaurants set up at the market and serve signature meals while live jazz bands perform and children play.

Freret has been called the “new Magazine Street,” due to its wide offerings of shops and restaurants in its commercial center. Many of its storybook looking houses are built in typical New Orleans “shot-gun” style. Yet, as is also characteristic of New Orleans, many homes differ from this traditional style.

Freret Street is home to Tulane University, a private university founded in 1834. The school’s tasteful landscaping and scenic architecture allow it to perfectly blend into the surrounding neighborhoods.

Residents are also within walking distance of the beautiful Audubon Park, Audubon Zoo, and Audubon Park Golf Course. Audubon Park is a popular spot for crawfish boils and family picnics. Its circular walking trail is regularly populated by both joggers and dog walkers. The Audubon Zoo is home to some of the rarest and most unique creatures in the world, and is a popular spot for families. The golf course sits in the center of Audubon Park, sheltered by ancient, shady trees and surrounded by an abundance of wildlife.
