Gentilly Terrace Neighborhood

The Gentilly Terrace area sits on a natural ridge that was created by the former flood plain known as Bayou Sauvage. The area, which is located in zip code 70122, is situated four to five feet above sea level, making it one of the safer areas of this historic port city. The boundaries of the community are Filmore Avenue to the north, Elysian Fields to the west, Peoples Avenue to the east, and Interstate 610 to the south.

The Gentilly Terrace area was the first 20th century neighborhood in the city to be listed as a National Historic District. The area is known for having the state’s largest collection of California-style bungalows that were built between 1910 and 1926. It is also known for its English cottages and Spanish and Mediterranean Revival raised homes that were built between 1910 and 1940.

Homes in the neighborhood are a mix of single-family and multi-family residences, some of which are owned by investors, and others which are owner occupied. These residential structures vary greatly in size with a range from roughly 850 square feet to 2,500 square feet. Most of the smaller properties represent half of a multi-family residence.

Unfortunately, the construction date of many properties isn’t known, but architectural styles can help in determining this information. In addition to the Spanish and Mediterranean Revival raised residences, there are raised-style cottages that were built in a shotgun style, meaning they are long and narrow. Ranch, Victorian and camelback-style architecture can also be found in the area.

The Gentilly Terrace Creative Arts Elementary School is an important architectural landmark in the community, as well as an award-winning Blue Ribbon school for 1991 – 1992. The building was constructed in 1914 and shows influences of both California craftsman and Swiss chalet styles of architecture.
