Holly Grove Neighborhood
Holly Grove, flooded after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, continues to rebuild and be revitalized. Home prices in this area range from $32,000 all the way to $150,000. Creole and shotgun houses are what is mainly found in Holly Grove.
Bordered by Palmetto Street to the north, Leonidas, Fig, Foeshey, Edinburg, and Cambronne Streets are the boundaries to the east. South Claiborne Avenue borders the neighborhood to the south, and Jefferson Parish is the boundary to the west. Holly Grove is in the 17th Ward.
Conrad Playground has a small baseball diamond where children play on Little League teams. Another playground that provides resident children a place to participate in team sports is Cuccia Byrnes Playground. Next to the playground is Larry Gilbert Baseball Park, named for the New Orleans native who went on to play for the 1914 “Miracle” Boston Braves.
Holly Grove Market and Farm provides residents with fresh produce and teaches them how to farm and garden. The market is open on Tuesdays from noon to 6:00 P.M. and on Saturday from 10 A.M. until 2 P.M. Holly Grove Market also makes deliveries, and residents can pick up a produce box at Holly Grove’s satellite markets.
Rhythm and Blues singer Johnny Adams grew up in Holly Grove, as did rappers Lil Wayne and Mack Maine. Other notable names from Holly Grove are DJ Hollygrove, a radio personality, and Theryl Declouet, a member of the musical group Galactic.
The largest river system in the United States is the Mississippi River. It originates at Lake Itasca, Minnesota and spills into the Gulf of Mexico below New Orleans. The river is a source for boating, fishing and entertainment.
