Lake Shore – Lake Vista Neighborhood

The ideally planned community of Lake Shore/Lake Vista is one of New Orleans’ newer and wealthier neighborhoods. There is a mixture of home styles here, as is typical of New Orleans. Homes range from modest shotguns to luxurious residences.

The neighborhood is a part of zip code 70124 in Orleans Parish. It is bounded by Lake Pontchartrain to the north, Robert E. Lee Boulevard to the south, Pontchartrain Boulevard and the New Basin Canal to the west, and Bayou St. John to the east.

The area was built up on land that was acquired from the Lake Pontchartrain reclamation. It is made up of the Lakeshore and Lake Vista subdivisions.

The Lake Vista subdivision, in particular, was very carefully planned with a web of cul de sacs, all leading to a central point. Several parks stretch out from the center, forming a star pattern and affording many homes with park-side views. In addition to the parks mentioned, Lake Shore/Lake Vista is also home to Tourmaline Park and Orleans Park.

The Old Spanish Fort is found within this neighborhood. The Spanish constructed the fort in 1769. During the Battle of New Orleans, it was used as an observation fort by Major Jean Baptiste Plauche’s battalion. Beginning in 1823, the fort was used as a hotel and subsequently as a casino. It now stands as a remnant of the 18th century.

The Robert E. Lee Strip Mall is also in this neighborhood. When residents feel the urge to expand their shopping and dining options, they can head to either the Metaire area or to downtown New Orleans. Both are just a short drive away.
