Lakewood Neighborhood

The Lakewood neighborhood is situated in northwestern New Orleans, Louisiana, just over 10 minutes from downtown. Part of the Lakeview District Area, this community extends to Veterans Memorial Boulevard on the north, Pontchartrain Expressway on the east, and the 17th Street Canal on the west. The southern boundary zig-zags and is defined by Palmetto, Cherry, Dixon, Mistletoe, Peach, Hamilton, Quince, and Last Streets. The zip code for Lakewood is 70124 in Orleans County. Some adjacent neighborhoods include West End, Navarre, Dixon, and Mid City.

For many years, one of the most prominent features of the Lakewood community was the Lakewood Country Club, which spanned the neighborhood’s southern boundary. However, in the 1960s the golf course was relocated to Algiers to make room for nearby Interstate routes I-10 and I-610. Its former ground became the Lakewood South and Lakewood North subdivisions. Fortunately for residents who like to golf, the Metairie Country Club is situated just beyond neighborhood boundaries to the southwest. This prestigious club dates back to 1922 and offers a variety of amenities. In addition to an innovative 18-hole golf course, this private club offers three swimming pools, six tennis courts, a fitness center, and several dining options.

Situated along I-10, Lakewood residents enjoy convenient access to the rest of the city, as well as a variety of commercial offerings. Other attractions nearby include the Delgado Community College on City Park Avenue. Also City Park, a public park that spans 1,300 acres, making it larger even than New York’s Central Park, is closeby. This 1853 park is one of the most visited parks in the nation. Thousands of oak trees stand here; they date back more than six centuries. Despite extensive damage from Hurricane Katrina, the park is recovering nicely. Among the many attractions hosted at the park are the Pan-American Stadium, the New Orleans Botanical Garden, and the New Orleans Museum of Art.
