Seventh Ward Neighborhood

Of the 17 wards that make up New Orleans, the 7th ward is second only to the city’s 9th ward in size. The 7th ward stretches all the way from the Mississippi River to Lake Ponchartrain. The area’s eastern border, also known as the lower boundary, is shared with the city’s 8th Ward, and is located along Elysian Fields Avenue. Going up river, the area’s south and western border is shared with the 6th Ward. This is Esplande Avenue. Traveling along Esplande Avenue to the intersection of Bayou St. John takes you along the edge of the bayou to the northern border, Lake Ponchartrain.

The 7th Ward was particularly hard hit when Hurricane Katrina hit the city in 2005. The London Avenue Canal, which is located in the area, was breached on both sides, unleashing torrents of water over much of the Ward as well as the surrounding area. Although recovery is still slowly going on, the area has seen many of its former residents return from surrounding states. Two colleges are also located near this community; Dillard University, a private historically black liberal arts school founded in 1869 by the United Church of Christ, and the University of New Orleans.

One of the city’s most famous restaurants, Willie Mae’s Scotch House, is also accessible for residents living in the 7th Ward community. The restaurant has received significant public attention for the quality of their food, being rated as having the best fried chicken in America by Food Network Television and Bon Appétit magazine in 2005, just prior to Hurricane Katrina. The founder and owner, 89 year-old Willie Mae Seaton, was thought to be among the missing in the aftermath of the storm. However, she was found safely sitting outside the restaurant several days after the storm, and has since retired, handing the business over to members of her family.
