St. Bernard Area Neighborhood

The St. Bernard Area is situated in zip code 70122. It is west of the Gentilly Terrace area and east of the New Orleans City Park. The boundaries of the area are Harrison Avenue to the north, Wisner Boulevard to the west, Interstate 610 to the south and Paris Avenue to the east.

The impact of the devastation from Hurricane Katrina still remains in this part of the city. The population here has only returned to a quarter of what it was before Hurricane Katrina.

Homes in St. Bernard vary in size, but tend to be small, reflecting a time when houses were far smaller than what people expect now. There are also many rental properties, including some that are in very upscale and luxurious buildings. The same is true of the condos in the area. Apartments range in size from 711 square feet to roughly 1,504 square feet. Some of the buildings were constructed recently, but are designed in a style that is more in keeping with the most traditional old architecture of New Orleans.

The New Orleans Botanical Garden (which was once known as the City Park Rose Garden) is located within the 1,300 acres that make up the City Park. The botanical garden sustained major damage from Hurricane Katrina; consequently, outside plants, as well as container plants that were kept in greenhouses, were all lost.

The park was created as part of the Works Projects Administration, a program that was one outcome of President Roosevelt’s years in office, who created it in 1935. This important city landmark is also one of the few surviving examples of Public Garden Design, both from the Art Deco period and from the WPA.
