Treme – Lafitte Neighborhood

The Treme-Lafitte neighborhood of New Orleans covers 1.33 square miles of the city. It lies east of the French Quarter, along Esplanade Avenue, North Broad Avenue, Lafitte Street, St. Louise Street, and North Rampart Street. Treme-Lafitte is a mostly residential neighborhood with houses, townhouses and apartments.

The Treme-Lafitte neighborhood is within walking distance of the French Quarter. It is close to historical sites and monuments such as Jackson Square, Washington Artillery Park, the New Orleans Jazz National Historic Park and the French Market.

Treme-Lafitte’s location is close to the Mississippi River. Residents and tourists can stroll along the river. Washington Artillery Park, which is directly across the street from Jackson Square, has views of the square, the river and the New Orleans skyline.

Jazz trumpeter Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, known to critics as the greatest jazz performer, was born in New Orleans in 1900. His fame and popularity as a trumpet virtuoso and singer has endured since his death in 1971.

The 32-acre Louis Armstrong Park, located in the Treme-Lafitte neighborhood, is named after the performer and New Orleans’ favorite native son. Designed by local architect and urban designer Robin Riley, the park contains a statue of Armstrong, the New Orleans Municipal Auditorium, the Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts, and Congo Square.

New Orleans is considered the birthplace of jazz. The park is known for its rolling hills and lagoons, but it is also a place to educate and entertain visitors about the rich jazz history of the city. The park has exhibits, plus indoor and outdoor space for public performances.
