Tulane – Gravier Neighborhood

Tulane-Gravier is located in the heart of New Orleans and within zip code 70119. The neighborhood is named after Paul Tulane, a significant contributor to Louisiana’s education system and the founder of Tulane University. It is also named for two brothers, Jean and Bertrand Gravier, who developed Faubourg St. Mary. Tulane-Gravier is right next to the Central Business District and very close to the French Quarter.

Boundaries of the area are South Broad Street to the west, St. Louis Street to the north, Interstate 10 and Julia Street to the east, and Pontchartrain Expressway, Julia Street and Interstate 10 to the south. The neighborhood has historically been a low-income area in which many residents rent their housing units. In addition to the existing residential component here, business and industry that includes manufacturing plants and industrial complexes is also found.

Homes in Tulane-Gravier are characteristic of the type of architectural style that is found elsewhere throughout the city – shotgun style. Most of the dwellings in this particular area are referred to as double shotguns.

Many of these homes are called camelback homes, a style that is basically a shotgun-style home. However, at the rear of the house there is an additional story allowing for more bedrooms and making the residence a 1 1/2-story structure.

One of the important landmarks in this community is St. Joseph’s Church. It is said to be the largest church in New Orleans, with a seating capacity for as many as 2,000 people. Groundbreaking for the church began in 1869, but work had to be suspended from 1875 until 1884 due to defects in the foundation. The roof was placed on the church in 1877, and it was finally dedicated on December 18, 1892.
