Fischer Development Neighborhood

The Fischer Development Neighborhood of New Orleans is a residential neighborhood along Highway 90. It is located west of the Mississippi River Bridge and is part of the West Bank neighborhood of Algiers.

Fisher is an urban community on 48 acres, where most people rent their homes and apartments.

As the result of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the city suffered the shortage of affordable housing for its residents. The original William J. Fischer Housing Development was demolished by 2008, and then developed as a mixed-income community.

The Fischer Development Neighborhood is close to the historic French Quarter of New Orleans for restaurants, museums, bars, antique shops, entertainment, and shopping. The French Quarter is pedestrian friendly. Residents and visitors can take the Riverfront Streetcar for its stops along the district.

Jackson Square is the heart of the French Quarter and honors General Andrew Jackson, the hero of the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812 and the seventh President of the United States. An impressive statue of “Old Hickory” atop his horse is located in the middle of the square.

The streets surrounding Jackson Square are enlivened by public artists and entertainers. Mule-drawn carriages take visitors on a tour of the French Quarter.

Washington Artillery Park, with its Civil War cannon, is located directly across from Jackson Square. It overlooks the Mississippi and has a view of the waterfront, Jackson Square and the city skyline.

The French Market is an easy stroll from the park. Known as “America’s Oldest Public Market,” it began as a Native American trading post. The French Market is home to a farmers market, a flea market, restaurants, cafes and retail shops. It has occupied the same site since 1791 and is a favorite cultural and entertainment destination.
