Downtown Riverfront Neighborhood
Downtown Riverfront is located in zip code 71101. The boundaries of this area are North Common Street to the west, Caddo Street to the north, Interstate 20 to the south, and the Mississippi River to the east. This busy urban area is a mix of entertainment and attractions, offices and other types of businesses, and some residential property.
The residential property in this neighborhood exists in the form of condominiums or other types of apartments. Some are in old buildings that have been refurbished, so that the residential areas occupy the upper floors while the lower floors are used by commercial and retail businesses. Other apartments are in much more modern buildings.
The downtown area is filled with a mixture of high rises and shorter buildings, all crowded into this very compact area. The area that is closest to the river offers more greenery and foliage, but throughout the majority of this part of Downtown Riverfront area, there is mostly cement. There is one small grassy area at the far northwest corner of the neighborhood, but it seems likely that these two blocks are awaiting some sort of development. Every square inch of usable space is being occupied.
The Stage of Stars and the Shreveport Municipal Auditorium is an interesting place to visit. The building, an example of Art Deco architecture, was built in 1929. The Stage of Stars Museum features the dressing room that Elvis Presley used. Visitors can also stand on the stage where Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jim Reeves and others, got their start.
Barnwell Garden and Art Center is located at the far eastern edge of the Downtown Riverfront area. The highlight of the center is the 7,850 square foot dome conservatory and garden. Visitors can walk along a winding path, gazing at exotic and tropical plants, including bromeliads, palms, and native plants such as azaleas.
