Canton Neighborhood

For those who have “hip neighborhood” on their list of must-haves, Canton deserves a look.

From a quiet harbor area, the Canton neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland has grown into a vibrant center of culture and nightlife. Located along Baltimore’s outer harbor in the southeastern section of the city in zip code 21224, the community is centered around a park called O’Donnell Square, named after the sea captain who originally lived here.

The neighborhood is believed to have acquired the name Canton because Captain John O’Donnell, who owned much of the land in the late 1700s, traded tea, silk, and satin with Canton, China. The neighborhood was a major port but soon became industrialized.

Canton’s revival began approximately 20 years ago when restaurants began moving in, followed closely by real estate speculators. Gentrification also brought new development to the neighborhood, including the Canton Waterfront Park and Maryland Korean War Memorial, a rehab of the old American Can Company building, two marinas and a public boat launch, a new soccer arena, an art gallery and a number of new bars and restaurants. New townhouses dot the neighborhood, as well as waterfront apartments and condominiums in former industrial buildings.

The majority of homes are early 20th-century two- and three-story row houses, many no wider than 13 feet. Some homes closer to the water date from the Civil War; most have been rehabbed and modernized. Most feature the signature marble and brick steps that lead from the sidewalk to the front door.

Canton Square, the neighborhood’s culinary hub, offers Nacho Mama’s, Speakeasy, Looney’s, Claddagh Pub, JD’s Smokehouse, Coburn’s and Cosmopolitan. Laid back neighborhood pubs include Geckos, Mahaffey’s Pub and NcDevin’s.

Parks in Canton include Patterson Park, Canton Waterfront Park (home to the Maryland Korean War Memorial), Canton Dog Park and Two Rivers Park.

Canton is served by Hampstead Hill Academy, a charter school, and Patterson High School.

Public transportation includes MTA bus lines 7, 10 and 13. Taxis can easily be hailed on the square or on Boston Street. Water taxis are also available.

The boundaries of Canton are Eastern Avenue to the north, Patterson Park Avenue to the west, Boston Street to south and Clinton Street to the east. It is roughly two miles east of Baltimore’s downtown district.
