Montgomery County, Maryland
Montgomery County, Maryland, located just north of Washington, DC, and southwest of Baltimore, has two exceptional rankings. First, it’s one of the most affluent counties in the nation, with a median household income of $91,440; and second, has the highest percentage of residents who hold post-graduate degrees.
The county seat of Montgomery County is Rockville. Most of the county’s population, which numbers 971,777, lives in unincorporated areas such as Silver Spring, Germantown and Bethesda. Montgomery County is a part of both the Washington DC and the Baltimore-Washington metro areas.
Not surprisingly, this wealthy county offers a multitude of arts and cultural venues, historical sites and well-maintained public parks. In fact, Montgomery County offers more than 33,000 acres of parkland in 345 parks; residents enjoy access to superb outdoor recreation.
Brookside Gardens are Montgomery County’s award-winning, 50-acre public gardens located within Wheaton Regional Park. The gardens offer several distinct areas: Aquatic Garden, Azalea Garden, Butterfly Garden, Children’s Garden, Rose Garden, Japanese Style Garden, Trial Garden, Rain Garden and the Woodland Walk. The Formal Gardens areas include a Perennial Garden, Yew Garden, the Maple Terrace, and Fragrance Garden. The gardens also feature two conservatories, and a horticultural reference library in the visitors center. Admission is free.
Fishermen will enjoy Clopper Lake, a 90-acre impoundment in Seneca Creek State Park. Clopper Lake has an over-abundance of largemouth bass, as well as tiger muskie fingerlings and a hybrid cross of northern pike and muskellunge. The lake also contains catfish, bluegill, black crappie, brown bullheads, common carp and pumpkinseed sunfish. The lake is open from dawn until dusk.
The Trail at the Dalecarlia Tunnel is built upon the abandoned rail bed of the 11-mile Georgetown Branch of the B&O Railroad. The trail is now complete as a hard surface trail from Georgetown to Bethesda, and is a packed crushed-stone trail suitable for most bikes. Four bridges and two tunnels offer trail users gentle gradients and grade-separated roadway crossings.
Montgomery County is an important business and research center; it is the third-largest biotechnology cluster in the nation.
