Porter Square Neighborhood

Porter Square is a neighborhood in Cambridge, Mass., that also overlaps into the town of Somerville. It isn’t actually a square like some of the traditional squares in Cambridge; it is more of a commercial strip on Massachusetts Avenue and some side streets. The Porter Square neighborhood is located in the northern part of Cambridge and more to the west than the east. It is southeast of Davis Square and less than a mile from Harvard Square.

Cambridge, one of the oldest cities in Massachusetts, is north of Boston across the Charles River. Porter Square has a T stop on the Red Line and is also on the commuter rail line. It is located where Massachusetts and Somerville avenues cross each other.

When it comes to houses, Porter Square is an area where most of the real estate is condos and apartments. Many former single-family homes are condo conversions. It is still possible to find some turn-of-the-century homes on one of the smaller streets that have been beautifully restored and rest behind manicured hedges. The homes most likely have been converted into condos but have a lot of charm.

Porter Square is, for the most part, a very commercial area with residential side streets coming off the high-volume traffic roads. The neighborhood is old and established. There are sidewalks, and some of them are even brick. The area does not have a lot of grass, and you will need to go outside the neighborhood if you are looking for a park for jogs or walks.

Porter Square is home to Lesley University. If you are looking for shopping, you will find a Star Market (formerly Shaw’s Supermarket) and a CVS Drugstore.
