Prospect Hill Neighborhood

With its rich history and well-preserved, turn-of-the-century historic homes, Prospect Hill is a highly desirable neighborhood. The community is named for the Prospect Hill Monument, which was built to commemorate the initial British siege of Boston during the Revolutionary War. Some of the area’s homes are located on the hill, while others can be found in Union Square. A Civil War landmark, the square is currently a mix of residences and businesses.

Home designs are varied in Prospect Hill. You’ll find refurbished 1880s townhomes in the Cape Cod style, as well as turn-of-the-century Colonial and Queen Anne homes. The area, which encompasses zip code 02143, is bounded by School Street on the West, Medford Street and School Street on the North, Medford Street and McGrath Highway on the east, and Washington Street on the south. Much of Prospect Hill is residential, although there are many shops and restaurants in Union Square, which sits at the intersection of Washington Street and Somerville Avenue in the southern part of the community.

The Prospect Hill’s Castle overlooks Union Square and provides panoramic views of the community. During the Revolutionary War, the vantage point this hill offered held great strategic importance, so the castle was built in 1902 to commemorate the war’s many hard-fought battles on this site.

Prospect Hill Park is also located on the hill, offering wonderful views of downtown Boston. At the park are hiking trails and picnic benches. A few blocks away is Foss Park, which has playgrounds, athletic fields, picnic tables, and benches.

A Farmer’s Market held each Saturday in Union Square. The community is also home to the Prospect Hill Academy, which serves students kindergarten all the way through 12th grade.
