Settlers who arrived in Genesee County, Michigan during the 1800s must have been a little bit sentimental – they named the county and several locations after places in New York and Pennsylvania, the homes they left behind. Genesee County, established in 1835, celebrates its history at the Crossroads Village, an authentic village of life along the Great Lakes during the 1800s. The village contains 34 historic structures, the Genesee Belle Riverboat, and the 1869 Horton-Colwell Building, which is home to an opera house.
The Genesee County seat is Flint, situated along the Flint River. Flint is just over 60 miles from Detroit and is one of the largest cities in Michigan. Known as the birthplace of General Motors, Flint was a manufacturing hub until the 1980s. Due to a loss of the manufacturing industry, Flint has struggled with finding a new identity. As the city makes strides toward diversifying its economy, other opportunities, such as shipping and technology, have emerged. Things look promising – Kettering University is one of the top colleges in the US, ranking first in Industrial/Manufacturing Engineering, according to US News & World Report’s Best Colleges 2012 edition. Small businesses catering to college students find University Avenue an attractive location – this street connects the University of Michigan-Flint with Kettering University and is fast becoming a trendy urban hub.
The Flint Cultural Center features performances in dance, music, and theater as well as other festivals and events. Flint Children’s Museum offers over 40 hands-on exhibits. The Flint Farmer’s Market is a year-round indoor market featuring locally-grown produce as well as an art gallery, wine shop, deli, and café. The city of Flint maintains two public golf courses and several parks.
Other cities in Genesee County include Montrose, Grand Blanc, Flushing, Fenton, Burton, Linden, Mount Morris, and Davison. Villages include Goodrich, Otisville, and Gaines. Townships include Thetford Center, Gaines, Mundy, Vienna, Kipp Corners, and Whigville.
