In the case of Macomb County, a lake runs through it. Lake St. Claire is situated between Canada and Michigan, running along the eastern border of Macomb County. The county seat is Mount Clemens, a city that was once a resort area for the rich and famous because of its bathhouses.
Once playing host to the rich, such as Randolph Hearst and the Vanderbilts, and the famous, such as legends Clark Gable and Mae West, the first bath house opened in 1873. At its peak, the city contained more than 10 bathhouses. That all came to an end in the 1970s and only one of the bathhouses remains. The city is located along the Clinton River, and boating and fishing are popular pastimes. The gorgeous downtown area boasts a collection of cafes, restaurants, boutiques, pubs, and delis. This pedestrian-friendly area also contains gazebos, fountains, and gardens. An open-air farmers market is open every weekend from May through November.
