The Marine Corps Air Station Miramar is situated on 23,116 acres of land roughly 10 miles north of downtown San Diego. The base’s history began in 1917, when Camp Kearny was established in response to WWI. The base was closed and many buildings demolished in 1920. During WWII, parts of the base were put into use as Camp Elliott. During the Vietnam War, the base was used to train pilots.
Today, the base is home to the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum, which is open to the public, and a National Cemetery. Every October, nearly 700,000 people attend the Miramar Air Show, the largest military air show in the nation. It is a three-day event that coincides with Fleet Week.
Kearny Mesa, named for the original Camp Kearny, is a terrific location for an apartment near MCAS Miramar. Other great communities to consider include University City, Clairemont Mesa East, Sierra Mesa, Linda Vista, Birdland, Tierrasanta, and Serra Mesa. San Diego’s northern neighborhoods are also ideal, since I-805 leads straight up to the base. Neighborhoods to consider include University Heights, North Park, Normal Heights, and Mission Hills.
