Kings Bay Naval Sub Base, GA

The Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base, a US Navy base, is located near St. Marys, Georgia. This base contains the US Navy fleet of ballistic missile nuclear submarines armed with Trident missiles. It contains the Submarine Squadrons 16 and 20, as well as the Trident Training Facility and the Naval Submarine Support Center. This large base covers 16,000 acres – including 4,000 acres of protected wetlands. The base contains archeological sites and a wide variety of wildlife.

Saint Marys is a quaint riverside town with Victorian architecture and wide streets. The river is popular with boaters, and sailboats are often seen on the open waterway. This small, southern town is home to some wonderful seafood restaurants and plenty of shopping. For those who enjoy outdoor adventures, Saint Marys is also home to Crooked River State Park, a historic park with over 50 miles of hiking trails. This park is part of the birding trail and contains all types of birds, including bald eagles.

Cumberland Island National Seashore is accessible only by boat from Saint Marys. This historic, remote island allows only a set number of visitors each day, ensuring that its delicate ecosystem stays uncompromised. The island contains wild horses, the Dungeness Historic District, the Plum Orchard Mansion (built in 1898 by Lucy Carnegie), and the First African Baptist Church. The maritime forest leads to miles of natural beaches, perfect for an afternoon of sunning or beachcombing.
