Rock Island Arsenal, IL

In the center of the Mississippi River near the Iowa border, Rock Island Arsenal has a long and important history. Rock Island began as Fort Armstrong in 1816. During the Civil War, it was home to a Union Army prison camp. Today, it is still in use, serving as the manufacturer of military equipment and ordnance – a job the arsenal began in the 1880s.

Rock Island Arsenal is a National Historic Landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The island houses several 19th century buildings, Colonel Davenport’s House, and the Rock Island National Cemetery – a Confederate cemetery where 1,964 Confederate prisoners and 125 Union guards are buried. The Rock Island Arsenal Museum, the second-oldest Army museum in the US, was built in 1905.
